The Blossburg State Coal Festival, celebrating the region’s coal mining history, has released the schedule of events for this year’s festival which starts on Wednesday, May 22 and runs through Saturday, May 25 at Blossburg’s Island Park.

Wednesday, May 22 is the third annual Senior Day from noon-6 p.m. at Riverside Plaza. Parking is available.

Confirmed vendors that will have information booths include the Tioga County Sheriff’s Department, BeST Transit, Benedict’s Bus Service, the Area Agency on Aging, APPRISE, the Bloss Pharmacy, the Elder Services Workgroup and Haven of Tioga County.

A picnic dinner will be served from 3:30-4:30 p.m. and will be free to any senior or clients of any of the local residential, workplace or day programs attending Senior Day.

A disposal point for prescription drugs will be set up by the Blossburg Police Department. The public can turn in any outdated or unwanted prescription drugs there or Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Blossburg borough office.

Individuals or groups in need of transportation to and from Senior Day, can contact BeST Transit for reservations at 570-659-5330. Reservations should be made a minimum of three days ahead of time.

Activities on the Island begin Thursday3 with Family Night and will include fire safety demonstrations by the Blossburg Fire Department, and a bike rodeo.

Admission to this year’s festival is $3. Buttons can be purchased at the gate or at businesses in downtown Blossburg.

This year, the Coal Festival committee will provide inflatables to all children attending the festival at no charge, said organizer Annie Metarko-Brooks. There will be a zip line and bungee trampoline for older children that will be pay-to-play.

Coal Festival events on Island Park begin at 6 p.m. and include entertainment, food vendors, booths and carnival games.

Although not a Coal Festival event, everyone is welcome to attend the annual Memorial Day Ceremony at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 27 at the Veterans Memorial in downtown Blossburg.
