GORHAM — Marcus Whitman's FFA chapter took first place at the annual New York State FFA Floriculture Career Development Event May 2 in Syracuse.

Jonathan Lasek, Cassidy Miles, Makayla Selvek, and Camry Semans are on the team. Deanna Gentner and Mary Coolbaugh are the team's agriculture education instructors and FFA advisors

Seventy-three students representing 13 FFA chapters participated in this year's state event, which is designed to display students' agricultural knowledge and skills in the area of floriculture, or flower farming. The event includes a general knowledge exam; problem-solving and decision-making; plant and tool identification; floral design; and a team activity.
